Your First Message Across Borders: How to Start a Conversation That Feels Real

Writing to someone in another country is a little different. You may not share a first language, a time zone, or the same sense of humor. A thoughtful first message closes much of that gap.

Start with something specific

β€œHi, how are you?” gives the other person nothing to answer. Pick one detail from their profile and ask about it. If they mention hiking, ask about their favorite trail. If they love cooking, ask what dish they would make for a guest from abroad.

A good first message has three parts:

  1. A short greeting.
  2. One specific thing you noticed.
  3. One open question that is easy to answer.

Keep your language simple and kind

If one of you is writing in a second language, short sentences help. Avoid slang, idioms, and sarcasm, which often get lost in translation. Be patient with spelling and grammar. Everyone is doing their best.

  • Do: use clear, warm sentences.
  • Do: ask about daily life, family traditions, food, and music.
  • Skip: jokes that depend on wordplay.
  • Skip: comments about appearance in a first message.

Mind the time zones

Say where you are and when you are usually free. β€œI’m in the US Central time zone, so mornings are best for me” saves a lot of confusion. Don’t read a slow reply as lost interest. The other person may simply be asleep.

Keep it on the platform at first

Early on, stay in the platform’s messages. It is normal for someone you have just met to want to move to another app, but a very early request to leave the platform is worth noticing. Hemisphere Hearts automatically blocks phone numbers, emails, and social handles in messages, display names, and bios, so people can get to know each other before sharing personal details.

Never send money to someone you have not met in person, however convincing the story. If a conversation turns to money, gifts, or an emergency, read our guide to romance scam warning signs.

Take it one step at a time

You don’t need a perfect opening line. You need a real one: curious, respectful, and specific. Hemisphere Hearts is not open yet. Join the waitlist to be among the first to know when we open.
